Some Helpful Resources
for Organic Farmers
ATTRA (Appropriate
Technology Transfer to Rural Areas)
ATTRA is a national sustainable agriculture
information service funded by USDA that
offers free technical assistance and
information to anyone involved in commercial
agriculture. Call 1 (800) 346-9140 to ask a
specific question or request their
"Materials List" of over 100 informational
booklets on a wide variety of farming topics
and/or their "Resource Guide to Organic and
Sustainable Vegetable Production."
They also have a website:
http://attra.ncat.org
Appalachian Sustainable
Development
ASD maintains a small library of ATTRA
materials and other publications relating to
sustainable farming. A hands-on resource for
farmers - the Appalachian Harvest
Growers Manual - is available for $10.00.
There is a wide expanse of agricultural
experience among the staff and participating
farmers and they are willing to help other
farmers improve their farmland and their
livelihoods.
ASD also coordinates the Appalachian
Harvest network of organic growers - a
network of area farmers who cooperatively
raise organic produce for the wholesale
market.

commercial resale. It is designed especially
for the small to medium size food business,
with technical expertise available on-site.
The Appalachian Spring Cooperative includes
more than 2 dozen such food entrepreneurs,
and offers assistance in labeling, bulk

Virginia Cooperative
Extension and University of Tennessee
Agricultural Extension
Extension services offer a wide array of
experience and knowledge related to
production agriculture. They offer soil
testing for free (or for a nominal expense),
will visit farms to help diagnose problems
and help work towards effective solutions.
Appalachian Sustainable Development
maintains a current list of all local
extension agents or you can find their
offices in your phone book.
Peaceful Valley Farm

selection of organic materials and supplies
we know of. Their free catalog is packed

Most supplies listed in the catalog can be
purchased locally, so check with ASD before

something cheaper close-by.
OMRI (Organic Materials
Review Institute)
OMRI publishes the official list that
certifiers use to identify "approved,"
"restricted," or "prohibited" materials and
