Learning Landscapes: 3 Sisters Garden

Kindergarten – 1st Grade: The Three Sisters Garden

As kindergarteners the students learn the Native American story of the 3 Sisters. They then go to the outdoor classroom/school garden to plant corn, beans and squash. Each student receives a 3 Sisters coloring book and one squash plant to take home. In the fall as first graders the students travel to White’s Mill where the Learning Landscapes staff rotates students through corn, beans, and squash stations. Corn station: students take a tour of the Mill, grind corn into meal, eat popcorn and explore different varieties of dried corn. Bean station: students shell several varieties of dried beans, count and sort color. Squash station: students will smash pumpkins and look at them under magnifying lenses/microscopes, explore different varieties of squash/gourds and eat pumpkin cupcakes.

Students enjoy eating pumpkin cupcakes.

Exploration of the insides of a pumpkin is always fun!

Pass the pumpkin; guess the weight… Incorporating math skills by using games.

Chef Jassen from a local restaurant visits the outdoor classroom to help students learn how to make pumpkin cupcakes.
