Learning Landscapes: Red, White and Blue Potatoes

1st  –2nd Grade: Red, White and Blue Potato Garden

As first graders the students review the parts of a plant and what a plant needs to grow. Each student receives a Potato Journal to record their findings as they describe, weigh, and plant a potato in the school garden. In the fall as second graders they students meet in the outdoor classroom with Learning Landscapes staff where they harvest the potatoes they planted in the spring. Students peal and slice the potatoes then take them to the kitchen to cook. The students then measure, mix ingredients and mash the potatoes. They then eat their creation.
