Learning Landscapes: Globe Weather & WATer

4th -5th Grade GLOBE:

GLOBE Weather: Students use the GLOBE weather station to monitor weather and record data on a weekly basis. Students check temperature, relative humidity, cloud cover, contrail cover and rain/snow fall. Learning Landscapes checks in periodically to make sure things are running smoothly.

GLOBE WATeR: Students work in small groups that rotate through the grade level. Each week at a designated time a small group of students take monitoring tools out to the school pond. With assistance from Learning Landscapes staff students measure water and air temperature and perform several chemical water tests. Students record their weekly data and are responsible for training the next group to perform the monitoring tasks.

Chemical water tests analyze nitrates, pH, phosphates and dissolved oxygen in local water systems.

Physical water tests analyze turbidity (the clarity of water) and temperature.

Students are asked to reflect observations, sounds and feelings by writing and drawing in picturesque settings.

School ponds are  used as laboratories for testing prior to field trips within the community.
