ASD’s Executive Director to
Resign in December 2009
Anthony Flaccavento, executive
director of Appalachian
Sustainable Development, has
decided to step down from his
position in December 2009. ASD
and Flaccavento have received
numerous awards. The Ford
Foundation Leadership for a
Changing World Award, the
Virginia Green Building Award,
the designation as one of ten
2005 “non-profit” innovators by
Amazon.com, selected as a
National Food and Society Policy
Fellow by the Thomas Jefferson
Agriculture Institute, and
recognized by Farm Aid as a
Farmer Hero are but a few.
To ensure a smooth transition,
Flaccavento gave over one year’s
notice. The ASD board has taken
this opportunity to look at the
organization and ensure that the
current structure will take ASD
into the next phase of its
growth. A transition team was
formed and has met several times
to work towards identifying an
appropriate candidate to replace
Flaccavento.
Stay tuned to this website for
more information on Anthony’s
post-ASD career which will
likely involve a lot more time
farming as well as consulting
and speaking on sustainability.
We wish him all the luck!
