HELP REDUCE OBESITY AMONG CHILDREN AND ADULTS! Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia have some of the highest rates of obesity in the U.S. Lower income families are the hardest hit.  By supporting ASD’s Learning Landscapes Program, children learn how to grow good food in outdoor classroom settings and prepare healthy meals.  This educational process helps set the foundation for self-sufficiency and healthier eating habits in life.  Healthy Families—Farm Families works to generate funds to purchase fresh organic produce from local farmers.  The food is then distributed to low income families at more than 100 food pantries in our region by such organization as Second Harvest and Ecumenical Faith in Action.

HELP SAVE FAMILY FARMS! Through its sustainable agriculture program, ASD offers farmers, especially organic farmers, training and access to aggregation and distribution services and markets, including ASD’s Appalachian Harvest organic produce enterprise.  ASD also supports farmers markets throughout the region.  Family farms and these markets are keys to ensuring the availability of local good food and generating wealth that sticks for farmers and our communities in Central Appalachia.

HELP SAVE OUR FORESTS!  The forests of our region are some of the most biologically diverse and most threatened anywhere.  ASD works to protect these vital resources by training landowners in methods to manage their forests sustainably. We also help them access incentive programs, such as the Appalachian Carbon Partnership, and sustainable wood processing facilities to earn income for their sustainably harvested logs.
